January 6th, 2021 saw a bizarre and eye-opening attack on the US Capitol by supporters of former president Donald Trump hell bent on uncovering the "truth" about a supposedly stolen election. Many factors contributed to this unprecedented attack, though one stood out in particular: the physical space in which it occurred. The temporary and permanent security measures found around the National Mall-fencing, jersey barriers, and the presence of armed guards-contribute to DC being referred to as a "fortress city." This designation is used to describe cities or spaces obsessed with physical security systems and the architectural policing of social boundaries, which can contribute to heightened senses of paranoia and aggravation in its users. A notable example is walls, bringing the subject right to Pratt Institute and the title of this thesis. Walls are but one example of security measures around Pratt that were designed to bring safety to those within its boundary. But when looking at the school's campus as a public space, this simple fixture of security becomes a symbol of exclusivity. A case study explores Pratt's history from its ties to urban renewal, student dissent and its effect on change around campus, and precedents of community outreach long past. These three aspects of the case study are synthesized with an analysis of Pratt's most recently proposed master plan. Interviews with key figures in the master plan, Pratt faculty, and students and community members put the school's history in perspective and ultimately shape recommendations that call for a transformation in both Pratt's physical campus and the policy behind it. While the events of January 6th exposed problems in planning, the Pratt campus is simply a first step in beginning to understand and address solutions that can be applied universally.
