In this study of domestic violence, batterers and victims were used to test the assumption that the two groups differ on affective traits and physical symptoms as described by the five phase theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Specifically the following hypotheses were tested: there are significant differences among batterers (B), non-batterer male controls (MC), victims (V), and non-battered female controls (FC) on (1) TCM diagnoses; and (2) affective traits; and (3) there is a significant relationship between TCM diagnosis and affective trait. Fifty predominantly Caucasian volunteers from Northern California ranging in age from twenty to sixty-five participated in the study. Data on affective traits, physical symptoms, domestic violence, alcohol and drug usage and personal background and information were collected from all four groups with the following instruments: Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist-Revised (MAACL-R), a specially developed Physical Symptom Checklist (PSC), Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS), Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST), Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST), and a biographical data questionnaire. The findings only partially supported the second hypothesis. Bs were more hostile than MCs (p $<$.05). A significant difference between Bs and MCs on liver scores of the PSC and a significant correlation between liver scores and hostility were found to be insignificant after rescoring due to a discovered overlap in the MAACL-R and PSC. Additionally, Vs were found to be significantly higher than both control groups on a special liver minus kidney score (L-K). Bs had significantly less positive affect than MCs. Also, on a special depression minus positive affect score, Bs had significantly higher scores than both control groups. A positive correlation between energy level and hostility for Bs was compared to a significantly negative correlation for Vs. A major implication for treatment includes the need for treatment programs to adequately address batterers' hostile and depressive traits. The L-K scores of the PSC may, with further research, prove a valuable screening tool to identify abused women who are reluctant to admit their victimization.
