This dissertation aims to reassess the early reception of Zhu Xi's 朱熹 (1130-1200) commentary on the Odes (Shijing 詩經 ), which is entitled the Collected Commentaries of the Odes (Shi jizhuan 詩集傳). Hailed as one of the most influential thinkers in Chinese history, Zhu Xi set a milestone in the history of the Shijing exegesis with his new approach to interpreting the Odes, an approach which markedly differed from the exegetical tradition of the period from the Han through to the Tang dynasty (ca. 2nd to 10th century). From the late Southern Song (the second half of the 12th century) to the early Ming period (the first half of the15th century), the Shijizhuan gradually became the new orthodoxy in the hermeneutics of the Shijing instead of the Han-Tang tradition. However, Zhu Xi's important notion of the "lascivious Odes" (yinben zhi shi 淫奔之詩) in the Shi jizhuan, was actually not deeply rooted in the hearts of those scholars, who were living in the period when the status of Shi jizhuan continued to rise. What are the reasons for this seemingly contradictory circumstance? In order to get a comprehensive understanding of the early reception of Shi jizhuann, this study is not merely research that aims to discern the trends of the early reception-history of Shi jizhuan during the above mentioned period, but, also, it attempts to highlight some unnoticed, but important facets, which seem to be factors that go against the trends, in the canonization-process of Shi jizhuan, which happened from the late Southern Song to the early Ming.RESEARCH AIMSI will work from three perspectives in order to reassess the reception-history of Shi jizhuan in the studied period. Firstly, I will investigate the reception of the different versions of the Shi jizhuan. Zhu Xi's Shijing commentary underwent several modifications due to changes in his attitude to the "Small Prefaces" ("Xiaoxu" 小序), which were an integral part of the canonical tradition of the Odes. Consequently, it is generally accepted that there were two versions of the Shi jizhuan: the early version and the late version. The early one was finished by the late 1170s and was widely quoted in the Lu shi jiashu Du Shi ji 呂氏家塾讀詩記 by Zhu Xi's friend, Lu Zuqian 呂祖謙 (1137-1181). This version basically interpreted the Odes according to the "Small Prefaces". The first manuscript of the late version was finished in 1186/87, and it still exists today as the textus receptus.In the late version, the "Small Prefaces" were removed from the texts of the Shijing, and Zhu Xi provided new readings of the Odes, including ones on the "lascivious Odes" (yinben zhi shi 淫奔之詩).Zhu Xi's annotations of the Odes were often mentioned and quoted by his contemporaries. However, the version-reception of Shi jizhuan in the late Southern Song, is somehow still shrouded in mystery: which version(s) was/were used by Shijing scholars after the composition of the late version? When did the late version replace the early one that was widely being used by scholars? This study intends, firstly, to unravel this mystery by inquiring into these issues.
