This dissertation examines the production, circulation, and reception of the History of Koryo (Koryosa 高麗史) and the Essentials of Koryo History (Koryosa choryo 高麗史節要), two court histories of the fifteenth century, in order to elucidate the history of writing and reading histories in Choson Korea (1392-1910), to analyze the understanding and reception of these two works, and to see how the two court histories have come to be critical historical sources today. It is the first in English to focus on the History of Koryo and the Essentials of Koryo History, and one of the first to extensively draw on material bibliography and the study of seals, and examine the marginalia and reader's marks that remain on the pages of the court histories. The significance of this project is as follows. First, I complicate our understanding of the History of Koryo as a source by pointing out that the sources used for the compilation were themselves were products of a specific times and places, edited several times over the course of the Koryo dynasty and edited yet again in the early years of the Choson as part of a larger culling of the archives. Further, by connecting compilations and compilers I contextualize the debates on the History of Koryo within the larger series of compilations in the early Choson. Second, relying on material bibliography and the survey of extant copies of both the History and the Essentials and their modern editions, I provide the first systematic investigation into the history of the publication, circulation and ownership of the History and the Essentials in both the premodern and modern periods, connecting their reproduction to the hegemonic technologies of each era. Further, I also geographically and temporally track ownership of the History and the Essentials, using seals and ownership marks. Third, I examine the reception and reading of the History and to a lesser extent the Essentials. I draw on government records to find instances of court use of the History and the Essentials, showing the various ways the court read-or neglected-the History and the Essentials. Beyond this, I use the marginalia on the History of Koryo to examine how its readers used their books and create a typology of marginalia and readers marks. I use this typology to suggest types of reading strategies beyond those well-known instances of the Royal Lectures or Confucian pedagogy, including the possibility of silent reading, and open up future avenues for research on reading in the Choson.
