The speech spectrum derived from English speakers has been commonly used in calculating desired gain in hearing aid evaluation and fitting. However, if different languages have different speech spectra, then these differences should be taken into consideration when prescribing real-ear gain or functional gain. The purpose of this study was to conduct a speech spectrum study using twenty English and twenty Mandarin speakers to determine and compare the spectral energy of the two spectra. Each language group consisted of ten male and ten female speakers. Two-and-a-half-minute speech samples were collected from each subject. Results indicated that the shapes of the generated English and Mandarin spectra were similar. Implications for hearing-aid fitting were discussed.
