Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) is a critical climate change mitigation tool. GSI are engineered systems mimicking natural systems for flood control and pollutant removal from stormwater runoff. Additionally, GSI facilitates sustainable city planning with its array of ecological services and represents a coupled human-nature system.Previous research highlights cognitive barriers as an impediment to GSI adoption. In this dissertation, I have studied the factors that shape GSI cognition. I used sociopsychological theories to determine key stakeholders' values, beliefs, and perceptions of GSI, the factors that form them, and their influence on future GSI adoption.A multiscalar contextual approach to understanding the social drivers of GSI is crucial for a smoother transition from gray to green infrastructure. Consequently, my primary research question is the following: what are the underlying elements influencing knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding GSI adoption barriers, and what are some specific ways to incorporate these considerations in GSI implementation modeling? The social contextual drivers of GSI adoption were understood using a mixed-method research design incorporating statistical modeling, qualitative analysis, and complex agent-based modeling.This dissertation comprises three papers that share core concepts of sociological influence on GSI adoption behavior. The first paper is a qualitative study analyzing the values and beliefs that frame and situate stormwater issues regarding water quality within the broader context of green infrastructure inception at the watershed scale. The second paper using structural equation models, analyzes the causal relationship of biophysical environment shaping GSI perceptions. This study identifies the impact of decision-making context on local government's GSI adoption intentions. The third paper uses agent-based models simulating stormwater managers' GSI adoption decisions under various scenarios. This paper bridges the existing gap in GSI implementation models by incorporating the complex interaction of human perception with biophysical determinants. This dissertation offers an overall understanding of the social dimensions that shape the perception of GSI adoption. As cities look to uptake more sustainable planning practices in combating the challenges faced by climate change, a thorough understanding of the social influencers of GSI adoption can play a significant role in integrating GSI into the urban landscape.
