Since the 1990s, the religious scene of Chinese popular religion in Singapore has witnessed a significant rise in reception of a group of underworld gods known colloquially as the Ah Pehs. The fundamental question of why do people worship these Ah Pehs, and in relation, how do people worship them and why is there an attitude change towards the cult call for detailed study. This thesis examines how the reception and reinterpretation of the Ah Peh cult have contributed towards the paradox of hell.I raised two discussion points in the introduction: the paradox of hell and the definition of Singapore Chinese religion. The first lays the framework of this thesis and the second sets the background of this research. Through a review of the related literature from the fields of religious studies (specifically on Asia), Chinese religion, and the study of hell, Chapter 2 highlights the significance of the research on the underworld gods. Chapter 3 discusses the origin of the Impermanence Ghosts, which is the result of the anthropomorphization of the Buddhist philosophical concept of impermanence - Anicca. I argued in Chapter 4 that the collapse of the Mandate of Heaven and the agency of religious matters in a foreign land have opened up the possibility of religious bricolage, whereby new gods and rituals are created for varied purposes based on existing cultural resources. Based on fieldwork observations, the Ah Pehs can be categorized into eight traditions, and their iconographies can be located in fifteen contexts classified based on a 6-grid matrix.Through a study of the materiality of the Ah Peh cult, Chapter 5 examines the offerings to and paraphernalia associated with the Ah Pehs. In certain cases, these paraphernalia are worshipped by the devotees in place of the iconographies of the Ah Pehs, rendering them as synecdoche for the gods. Finally, in Chapter 6, I raised the significance of laughter in Chinese religion, focusing on how a shift in the meaning and implication behind the significance of laughter in the Ah Peh cult reflect the changing reception of and attitude towards the cult. The case study of the Ah Peh party - a socially adapted carnivalesque ritual that blurs the boundary between the sacred and the profane - is examined in this chapter.
