Working from the supposition that the burnt offering was an atoning offering that prefigured the work of Christ, this study asks a simple question: what does the burnt offering mean for the doctrine of atonement? More specifically, is it possible to identify a mechanism of atonement in the burnt offering, a logic by which atoning actions of the offering have their atoning effects, and then to read Jesus's story according to that logic? An answer to this inquiry is pursued by way of a theological exegesis of Leviticus 1:1-9. Reading the Levitical cult as a ritual recapitulation of the narrative of Israel's election and deliverance in Genesis-Exodus, this study considers various elements of the narrative implicit in the cult (the setting, themes, plot, and hero) before putting forth its thesis: that the burnt offering promises atonement through filial satisfaction. As he proves to be the true Son of God, imaging his eternal Sonship in human flesh, Jesus Christ provides satisfaction for sin. This satisfaction meets the demands of covenant, creation, and consecration alike, as Christ returns to God through death and is thereby perfected in his human nature by the glory of the beatific vision. Focus on the concept of satisfaction is thus accompanied by an emphasis on recapitulation, the way in which Christ corrects and completes the human story as the second Adam. In the end, it is argued, it is the dynamic reality of the incarnation that proves to be the key to atonement, the primary mechanism that gives the whole sweep of the Son's incarnate mission its atoning virtue.
