This dissertation aims to present a more compelling and transformative religious-moral framework for environmental behavior. It specifically seeks to offer alternatives to prevalent Anglo-European, Christian approaches such as dominion, stewardship, and theocentric models, which view nonhuman nature primarily as resources to be controlled, conquered, or utilized for the benefit of humanity's material or spiritual well-being. These frameworks fall short in fostering a truly transformative shift in our relationship with the environment. To achieve this, it a new religious-moral framework that recognizes the intrinsic value of nature and considers nonhumans as ends in themselves is required. One promising approach that comes close to such a model is known as "Christian animism." Christian animism endeavors to establish a fundamental connection or compatibility between Christianity and Animism, aiming to guide Christians towards more environmentally conscious behavior and worldviews. However, existing scholarly work on Christian animism primarily focuses on constructing theological justifications for adopting this framework, often overlooking the longstanding incorporation of Christian and Animist worldviews among various indigenous groups in North America. To address this oversight, my manuscript examines how American Indian movements have merged their traditional Animist cosmologies with Christian worldviews as a means of adapting to changing socio-political contexts during the era of colonization. Emphasizing the ecological implications of this adaptive strategy, I align decolonization efforts with the creation of new frameworks for environmental conduct in a time of escalating climate crises. By recognizing the historically marginalized indigenous teachings, practices, and ecological wisdom as legitimate and potentially superior, this research challenges the colonizing "rational" Anglo-European understandings of nature that have arguably contributed to significant global environmental damage.Employing historical, ethnographic, and textual research methods, I demonstrate how the religious and ecological assemblages of American Indians can enrich and inform the development of Christian animism. In return, I argue that when appropriately contextualized and guided by decolonial methods and objectives, Christian animism can reciprocally contribute to the spiritual and political aspirations of contemporary American Indian environmentalism.
