History and current events provide some context to the perceptions of law enforcement by people of color. Policing practices date back to the 1800s when slave patrols were established to maintain order among the slaves. Slaves were subject to harsh treatment, including beatings, other forms of torture, and lynchings by patrol officers. Current data show a continuation of differential and negative treatment of people of color in many communities across the U.S. by members of law enforcement. While there is limited literature that supports reasons why people of color have negative perceptions of law enforcement, there are few studies that focus on members of the Black community themselves sharing attitudes and feelings about law enforcement themselves. This qualitative study, based on personal interviews, explores the attitudes, feelings, and perceptions of law enforcement held by individuals who are members of the Black community. Using grounded theory, key themes were identified in participant responses which ranged from fear and negative perceptions for some while others indicated a more neutral stance. Participants connected media presence, power and control, profiling and stereotyping, race, and internal conflicts and views as key factors that informed their attitudes, feelings, and perceptions. After analyzing data and the emerging themes, critical race theory was used to guide the discussion and analysis of findings.
