In southeastern U.S. hydropeaking tailwaters, extreme hydrologic variation generally precludes successful natural reproduction of Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. As a result, most tailwater fisheries rely on hatchery Rainbow Trout, typically stocked as either fingerlings (TL 229 mm). Due to poor overall survival of hatchery Rainbow Trout, fisheries managers have shifted towards stocking fewer and larger Rainbow Trout; however, fingerling Rainbow Trout are regularly stocked in multiple Tennessee tailwater fisheries. The Norris and Fort Patrick Henry tailwaters are both popular stocked Rainbow Trout fisheries in Tennessee. In recent years naturally-reproduced Rainbow Trout have been observed in both tailwaters, which raised questions about the contributions of stocked and naturally-reproduced Rainbow Trout. I investigated the abundance, survival, recruitment, and growth of stocked fingerling, stocked catchable, and naturally-reproduced Rainbow Trout in the Norris and Fort Patrick Henry tailwaters. From 2021-2022 I marked hatchery Rainbow Trout with a fin clip or a coded wire tag and a fin clip prior to stocking. I sampled each tailwater with a combination of boat and backpack electrofishing following a robust mark-recapture sampling design. Naturally-reproduced Rainbow Trout made up the majority of the Norris tailwater Rainbow Trout population. Robust mark-recapture model results in the Norris tailwater showed naturally-reproduced Rainbow Trout were more abundant than hatchery fingerlings, had greater or similar apparent survival rates to hatchery fingerlings, and more recruited to the Rainbow Trout population than hatchery fingerlings. In the Fort Patrick Henry tailwater, hatchery catchables and naturally-reproduced Rainbow Trout were similarly abundant. Growth rates of catchable Rainbow Trout stocked in the Fort Patrick Henry tailwater (35.1 mm per month) were among the highest reported in any southeastern U.S. tailwater fishery. Overall, my work suggested that hatchery fingerling Rainbow Trout recruited poorly in both fisheries and may not be an effective use of stocking resources in southeastern U.S. tailwaters where survival of hatchery trout is generally low. In addition, naturally-reproduced Rainbow Trout can contribute meaningfully in southeastern U.S. tailwater trout fisheries.
