Crayfish are an ecologically important component of aquatic ecosystems. Crayfish also threaten the integrity of aquatic ecosystems when introduced outside of their native distribution. As such, management of the taxon is of high importance to many natural resource management agencies. However, monitoring crayfish is hindered by the relative difficulty of sampling the cryptic taxon. Therefore, I sought to evaluate sampling gears for crayfish populations in lentic and lotic systems in Kansas to better inform sampling designs for the taxon. Specifically, I evaluated the size selectivity of four gear types and the potential influence of habitat characteristics on the detection and abundance of crayfish in lentic and lotic systems. In addition, I examined the effort requirements needed to precisely sample crayfish. Collectively, my results will contribute to the implementation of a state-wide sampling protocol for crayfish in Kansas and surrounding states.
