The relationship between Vietnam and cinema is complicated and often overlooked. The American intervention in Vietnam was the first war broadcasted on the televisions of millions of Americans nightly. Hollywood studios produced films that depicted America's involvement in the region shortly after the withdrawal of American forces in 1973. Films such as The Deer Hunter (1978), Apocalypse Now (1979), Platoon (1986), and Full Metal Jacket (1987) have left a tremendous impact on American cinema and the way that Americans remember the conflict. The same can be said for Vietnamese cinema produced after the First Indochina War (1946-1954). The films produced after the war were vital in educating the Democratic Republic of Vietnam's (DRV) population on the tenets of Marxism-Leninism regarding modernity, womanhood, and youth, mobilizing the public for war, and constructing national memory.From the inception of the Vietnam Feature Film Studio (VFS) in 1953, films were produced portraying the actions of heroic Vietnamese revolutionaries as they engaged in a nearly decade-long struggle for national independence. The Việt Minh would play an essential role as the arbiters of salvation from a dying feudalistic dynasty and an exploitative foreign colonial power. Both in the actual lived history and fictional history portrayed in films, the Party would play a central role in aiding the common soldier, peasant, and worker toward a socialist-oriented and independent Vietnam. This thesis analyzes the themes conveyed within several DRV films produced between 1959-1965.This thesis also aims to help us understand cinema's role in the Việt Minh's quest for political dominance and how film solidified its role in overthrowing the French in national memory. These themes would be instrumental in the modernization of Vietnam and in maintaining the revolutionary spirit post-independence. Each theme will reinforce the Việt Minh as the legitimate government of the Vietnamese people. First, by mobilizing the youth to engage in revolutionary activity; second, by promoting the creation of a new and modern woman out of the shell of neo-Confucian tradition; and finally, by being a force that fosters innovation and ingenuity amongst the proletariat and being a government for the average worker. The portrayal of the "model revolutionary" was vital to the Việt Minh's image as the lead fighting force of Vietnamese patriots.
