The information revolution has brought tremendous change to organizations. The proliferation of data sources has dramatically increased the amount of information leaders have at their disposal, confounding their ability to understand their organization, its environment, and emerging trends. Advances in information technology have also greatly enhanced organizations' connectivity, which has sped information flow and increased organizational interdependencies. The explosion of data and increases in interdependencies has accelerated the rate of change for organizations and made decisions more consequential. This dynamic organizational environment requires leaders who can navigate ambiguity, make sound decisions, communicate, and bring people together for collective action. Successfully navigating this environment also requires highly engaged followers who problem solve, innovate, and execute. In short, the contemporary challenges of organizations require wise leaders and engaged followers. This study utilized a qualitative approach to explore the relationship between follower perceptions of wise leaders and follower work engagement within U.S. Naval Intelligence. Interviews were conducted with 25 civilian and military personnel working in two mid-size commands within the U.S. Naval Intelligence Community. In particular, the interviews explored relationships, trends, and contextual influences of the Nonaka and Takeuchi (2019) phronetic leadership theory and the Schaufeli and Bakker (2004b) work engagement framework. The analysis of these interviews found a relationship between phronetic leadership and follower work engagement. In exploring these relationships, this study hopes to advance the understanding of phronetic leadership, its importance to knowledge organizations, and its utility in enhancing follower work engagement.{A0}
