Upper extremity exoskeletons have been created for multiple targeted uses. For this study, a soft and wearable upper limb exoskeleton was created using specific design criteria outlined in a metrics table. The device met all criteria and provides a variable amount of force to accommodate the user. This study investigates the upper arm muscle activation during self-directed locomotion in a powerchair, examines the muscle activation with and without the support of an upper limb exoskeleton. Ten young, healthy adults operated a powerchair for four trials with support from an exoskeleton and four trials without support, to determine the effects of self-locomotion in a powerchair with support from the device versus with no support from the device. We found a significant reduction in muscle activation of the biceps brachii. There was no other significant reduction in muscle activation used to control the powerchair with support from the device compared to no support from the device.
