Attachment relationships and peer bonds among combat unit service members are unique types of adult attachment that can impact transitions from one environment to another-- from deployment to post-deployment. This dissertation examined veterans' post-discharge adjustment relative to the perceived quality and characteristics of their attachment to their combat unit during deployment. Using attachment theory as a guiding perspective, this study explored the role of attachment to the combat unit that is formed during deployment and sought to understand the impact of peer attachment bonds among veterans relative to their ability to reintegrate successfully into civilian life post-discharge. A sample of 294 veterans completed the Deployment Risk & Resilience Inventory Second Edition (DRRI-2), the Military to Civilian Questionnaire (M2C-Q), and the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECRS), as well as a demographic questionnaire using an anonymous, online survey-based method. Findings showed the number of combat experiences a veteran went through decreased their ability to successfully transition to civilian life. Findings also showed that relationships built during deployment with members of their unit positively impacted a veteran's ability to successfully transition to civilian life.
