This thesis explores one of the distinct strands of liberalism which emerges in the 20thcentury, developed by political theorist Judith Shklar. In particular, it focuses on her use and integration of literature, and demonstrates the central role which literary works serve in her presentation of a character-based account of liberalism which is committed to realism, toleration, and injustice. The thesis is divided into three sections. The first provides historical context for Shklar and addresses the apparent tension which arises for a character-based account given Shklar's commitment to pluralism. The second sketches out the various uses of literary works throughout Shklar's corpus with an emphasis on intellectual history, utopian literature, and the normative use of literary works. The third examines the relationship between, and compatibility of, a liberalism which is focused on character and the liberalism of fear. Scholarship on Shklar, which has often emphasized the institutionally focused liberalism of fear, has lost sight of the important (and individualized) normative liberal commitments which I argue Shklar presents and attempts to persuade her readers towards through her use of literary works. Literature is able to both serve a persuasive function and uniquely capture her readers' attention, given the fictionality of its form and the affective nature of the works.
