The Filipino literary voice is one in confusion, still searching for an identity. A country still reeling from the scars of American imperialism leading to another oppressive era of marital law, the Philippines and its people continue to be a work in progress. In this thesis, I will argue that the Filipino literary voice is a voice of survival. In a country yearning for a national identity in a postcolonial state, the literary voice pushes against the colonizer in a protesting act of survival. By looking how culture has been shaped by the colonizer within the historical archive, education, the Filipino cuisine, and the multitude of languages and dialects, and how they are used, I will try to define the hybridity of a postcolonial Pinoy as one who adapts to survive, particularly in the three novels: Insurrecto by Gina Apostol (2018), Dogeaters by Jessica Hagedorn (1990), and America is Not the Heart by Elaine Castillo (2018).
