In 2020, the Education Department in Bogota initiated a bilingualism program for public schools to enhance English teaching in listening, writing, reading, and speaking skills from preschool to high school. Thus, students finish their schooling with an intermediate level of English, enabling them to navigate diverse professional and social contexts, as English serves as a lingua franca worldwide. However, unlike other skills such as reading and writing, speaking English correctly as a foreign language is a skill many students take a long time to master. Beyond performing pronunciation drills of English vocabulary in the classroom, students must learn about the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Therefore, this paper summarizes existing research on linguistic transfer from the first language to oral production in a second one. Moreover, it presents a workshop series for English teachers to practice incorporating the IPA instruction in their classes based on different teaching approaches to enhance English pronunciation as a foreign language. Consequently, students build phonological awareness to pronounce English correctly, gain confidence, and avoid misunderstandings with any English speaker.
