There is a gap in the literature and research concerning what African Americans perceive ADHD to be, and their concerns about the racism, labeling and stigmatism their child(ren) with ADHD may have to experience. This research study explored the perceptions and experiences of 10 African American mothers parenting school age children with ADHD between the ages of 5 and 17 years. Systems theory and social constructionism theory were the theoretical frameworks used for the study, and qualitative methods were employed to gain understanding from the personal experiences of the participants. This study provided phenomenological qualitative research on the perspectives and the experiences of the participants. The findings suggest that African American mothers and their children with ADHD benefit from positive experiences with educators and health professionals, and that societal racism and stigmatism played a part in the lives of their children. Future research and interventions directly targeting African American children with ADHD and their families exhorts educators and health professionals to understand the cultural context of where African Americans are coming from and to help increase awareness of ADHD in the African American community.
