Undergraduate students starting college for the first time are facing new challenges. The transition to college is one that many undergraduate students struggle with, whether it is the course load, finances, or having to make adult decisions for the first time. Also, during this transition, many college students are leaving home from the first time (Baghurst and Kelly, 2014). Some students are not prepared to cope with the new changes that will occur once they enter a college or university. The stress students will face during this new transition could adversely impact their emotional, social, and academic well-being. This study analyzed the relationship between stress and college students by examining how life satisfaction, value affirmation, and cognitive appraisal mediates the response students have to a public speaking task. The sample consisted of fifteen students attending public speaking class at a midsize University located in the Southeastern United States. Within this study values affirmation did not mediate the stress students experience as well as values affirmation did not increase life satisfaction. This study will help researchers and college administrators develop or expand programs designed to offer support to incoming college students when dealing with their new college life and academic stressors.
