Scope and method of study. The purpose of this study was to examine the emotional impact of organizational change on individuals using the Kubler-Ross (1969) grief construct as an a priori analytical theoretical lens. Responses to both local (school-level) and state (system-level) changes were examined. Participants were nine employees of a rural technology school in the south-southwestern part of the United States. All completed drawings, long interviews, demographic forms, and follow-up interviews. Data from other observations was also examined. Findings and conclusions. Responses that fit within the Kubler-Ross (1969) grief construct were reported at both the local and state levels. However, reported emotions and patterns of emotions differed partly due to differing elements of "real" versus "anticipatory" change. Other emotions falling outside the Kubler-Ross construct were also commonly reported. "Relief" had a unique position at the beginning of the grieving process-a departure from Kubler-Ross but aligned with Barger and Kirby (1995). "Relief" appeared to be preceded by distress about the unknowns of the change. A theme of participant "discomfort" with the negative emotions resulting from change and a sense of being torn between the logical and emotional was found. Questions were raised about the applicability of a common, linear grief model for human grieving. This study also used a drawing methodology to access the emotional responses to change. Drawings were found to: (1) create a path toward emotions, (2) lead to a more succinct representation of participant experiences, (3) require additional verbal interpretation by the participant for accuracy, (4) be unpredictable as a tool for encouraging participation in the research, (5) combat researcher biases when left unstructured, (6) be affected by the amount of researcher-imposed structure in the scope of how they could be interpreted, and (7) help to create triangulation of study data.
