Since the seventeenth century, there was a three-stage development of the English translation of the Yellow Emperor's Internal Medicine Su Wen throughout four centuries. The three stages are "translations from the perspective of the applied Western medicine" stage, "translations from the perspective of medical culture" stage and "translations from the perspective of applied Chinese medicine" stage. At the first stage, translators tended to use Western applied medicine as a reference point for judging Chinese medicine, which resulted in a very negative evaluation and a domesticating translation. Those made Western readers believe there was no value in Chinese medicine. In other words, at early stage, translators sought for applied medical value in Su Wen but failed. Influenced by the twentieth century research methods revolution in humanities and social science, many translators of Su Wen at the second stage started to view Chinese medicine as a medical culture and work on descriptive translations. They stopped making judgements on the clinical effects of Chinese medicine during translating. Later in the century, many Western and Chinese translators turned to introducing the clinical application value in Su Wen to English readers. Thus, a return of applied medicine perspective in translating happened. Limited by the poor communications at early period, translations of Su Wen were primarily domesticating. With the rapid development of Western modern medicine later, Su Wen translated into Western advanced medical system maintained domesticating style. In the latter period, research methods revolution in humanities and social science iv called on translators to pursue the equal status between Western and Chinese medical cultures through translating, and developments in Chinese medicine inspired many translators to introduce Chinese medicine in practice to the world. These two groups of translators created foreignizing translations of Su Wen in two ways. This study is innovative in that first, it shows the historical details related with Su Wen English translation in very early period. Second, the three stages in Su Wen English translation history are divided according to the two turnarounds in translating perspectives, which reveal the interaction and balance of medical power between two medical systems. Third, the case studies in this paper could serve as some test of Lawrence Venuti's theory on domesticating and foreignizing translation.
