The Ukrainian Baptist Church (UBC) has responded to the Russo-Ukrainian war of 2014 along its eastern border by broadening its ministry to engage in social service. But it is not clear how social ministry is grounded in the church's broader philosophy of ministry or theology of mission. The purpose of this study is to understand and explain members' perception of the role of social ministry in the mission of the UBC, about which there is currently very little in print. This study contributes to theories of both ecclesiology and missiology as the mission of the UBC in the world is identified and examined using a grounded theory approach. The central understanding that emerged from this study, the Ukrainian Baptist social ministry theory (UBSMT), is that 6 different factors shape the role of social ministry in the understanding and practice of the mission of the UBC; 3 of these factors are characteristics of the UBC, and 3 additional factors relate to the context in which the church and her members live and conduct their mission.
