The Gospel of Mark frequently describes Jesus as a teacher or as engaged in the act of teaching, proportionally more than the other synoptic gospels. Yet the reasons for the inclusion of this motif in Mark, and its contribution to the overall narrative, have not sufficiently been studied by New Testament scholars. This dissertation seeks to fill this gap. It is argued that while the Gospel contains significant parallels with other Greco-Roman literature featuring teachers as protagonists, Mark's Christological emphasis sets it apart from these other texts. A close study of selected Markan passages demonstrates that the teaching motif performs three functions within the context of the narrative. First, the teaching motif advances the Gospel's plot by serving to characterize the conflict between Jesus and the establishment. Second, scenes featuring Jesus's teaching provide an opportunity for a Christological depiction focused on Jesus's authority (εξ&ogr;σια) as its central theme. Finally, the teaching motif is a primary means by which the Gospel makes clear its rhetorical intentions toward its audience.
