This project proposes from an interdisciplinary perspective of biblical studies and psychology that Paul's use of the anthropological term [speical characters omitted] (melos, "limb") is significant to understanding the Christians' ongoing struggle with sin as portrayed in Romans 7:14-8:8. Paul pinpoints [speical characters omitted] as the source of a "governing principle" of sin that captivates persons to practice what they do not want to do, a ubiquitous experience throughout humanity. Paul describes the believer's relationship to sin, the Law, oneself, others, and God in terms contemporary psychology and neurology affirm as a principle, not in terms of a continuing "sinful nature." In the same manner that a principle of sin and death becomes established within the [speical characters omitted] of the body, so too the Holy Spirit establishes the principle of the Spirit and life in the body of the believer. This distinction between sin as a principle and sin as a power has significant implications for understanding sanctification both eschatologically and anthropologically.
