Thesis (M.A.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 2018.

This thesis compares Paul's argument regarding faith, works of the law, and justification in the book of Galatians to the Hebrew Bible's view of these subjects when approached compositionally and canonically. This thesis will affirm that Paul's assertion that Jews and Gentiles are justified by faith and not by works of the law was previously taught by the Hebrew Bible and that the Hebrew Bible was Paul's primary source when forming his argument. Thus, when Paul cites the Hebrew Scriptures, he is citing them within their original context and maintains their original meaning. The original context is primarily the compositional, canonical Hebrew Bible. Because Galatians possesses this relationship with the Hebrew Bible, the Hebrew Bible is an essential tool in interpreting Paul's argument in this book and must necessarily influence one's understanding of this doctrine. The message Paul proclaimed was that both Jews and Gentiles are justified - that is, given a status of rightness before God - by faith in Jesus Christ. Works of the law - that is, the entirety of the Mosaic Law - are incapable of justifying a person because of the human being's inevitable failure to do all that the law requires. Justification by faith in Christ was made possible by the work Christ accomplished on the cross.
