This project uses cognitive science of religion (CSR) as a framework to analyze the linguistic function of the phrase "Word of God" in Assyrian, Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic sacred prophetic writings in order to distinguish the convergences and divergences among the use of the phrase "Word of God" in each linguistic context. Humans desire communication with the divine. An important means of achieving this divine-human communication is prophecy. Prophecy, in turn, provides a salient focus for the cross-cultural nature of humanity's need for divine communication. Of special interest to this project is the phrase "Word of God" that occurs in prophetic corpora across various cultures, especially since the phrase has also been reused with theological meanings that developed from its appearance within prophetic texts. The project employs the CSR to facilitate a comparative analysis of four separate traditions, including some that have not been previously compared to each other (i.e., Assyrian and New Testament, Assyrian and Qur'an). Each chapter presents a discussion on the semantic domain of the terms utilized in expressing divine speech in the respective corpora. This discussion includes an analysis of the frequency and distribution of the terms that occur in construct with the divine name (i.e. Yhwh, theou, etc.). After establishing the semantic domain, aspects of CSR are applied to the text in order to bring out meanings and functions of the phrase that may not be initially evident. The specific expression "Word of God" appears in all these traditions (amat DN, dabar Yhwh, rhema/logos theou, and kalam/kalimat Allah), but has not been the focus of comparative analysis across all four traditions. By expanding the study to include the occurrence of "Word of God" in four languages and sacred texts, the particular phrase "Word of God" reveals the overarching human need not only for divine communication, but also for guidance, especially moral guidance, and for making sense of world events. And yet, the way in which these goals are accomplished vary depending on the manner in which the receiving community views their religion and their god(s).
