The study explores the following question: Within Exod 25-40, why is it emphasized repeatedly that the craftspeople, who build the tabernacle and its accessories, are filled with hokmah and the Spirit of God, and what significance does this have for understanding the tabernacle and the theology of the Pentateuch? A closely related question is also entertained: Is it correct to understand hokmah as "wisdom" (or, simply "skill"), and, if so, how does this passage contribute to the broader Pentateuch's theology of wisdom? In order to answer these questions, the dissertation analyzes: (1) the place of hokmah within the discourse of Exod 25-40, (2) the semantics of hokmah, especially in OT passages concerning creative work, (3) the significance of ruah elohim and ruah hokmah within Exod 25-40, in light of Gen 41:15-45 and Deut 34:1-12 and (4) the Pentateuchal context of Exod 25-40, including the contours of the Pentateuch's theology of wisdom. This study concludes that the tabernacle is able to fulfill its covenantal function ultimately because of the wisdom (hokmah) that enables the workers to carry out their crafts. According to Exod 25-40, the tabernacle's covenantal function is intertwined with its physical structure, makeup and appearance. Whereas God reveals the blueprint or plan for the tabernacle to Moses on Mt. Sinai, God's gift of wisdom is needed for Bezalel and his associates to execute God's plan for the tabernacle with precision. As a result of this competent handiwork, the tabernacle exhibits the requisite beauty for it to be a holy space for God's presence, it possesses the order and boundaries needed for providing separation between God and the people and, finally, it contains the accessories and instruments needed for the people to approach God in worship. This divine gift of wisdom in Exod 25-40 is consistent with the way in which God employs wisdom elsewhere in the Pentateuch, in that it advances his covenantal and redemptive mission. The concluding chapter discusses further implications of the study for biblical and systematic theology.
