The objective of this dissertation is to articulate the divine action involved in the work of illumination, and to do so by constructing an "economy of divine light." This project is necessary due to the absence of a robustly triune account of illumination. Illumination has been restricted to the domain of pneumatology despite the biblical text's witness to the contrary. The Gospel and Letters of John are an exemplary demonstration of this. Through an examination of Augustine's Tractatus In Iohannis Evangelium and Karl Barth's Erklarung des Johannes-Evangeliums this dissertation argues that the language of Light as it pertains to the Logos in the Johannine literature demands a more Christological and therefore, Trinitarian doctrine of illumination. From Augustine's theological interpretation of John, this project retrieves his theory of illumination, along with aspects of his Trinitarian theology and his understanding of God's nature as light. The project also draws upon Karl Barth's theological exegesis. By engaging the mostly untranslated work of his lectures on John, as well as his dogmatic work, this project constructs a doctrine of illumination that is located within the broader divine action of communicating light and life. This broader divine action is captured in what this projects calls an "economy of divine light." Within this economy, human knowledge of God in illumination is about human participation in the Son's knowledge of the Father by the power of the Holy Spirit. In the event of one's initial illumination, God communicates knowledge of himself while also granting the capacity to receive such knowledge, to believe it and obey it. There is also the ongoing work of illumination. This ongoing illumination is participation in the light of the divine life, and it is grounded in a profound theological actualism. That is to say, this participation depends upon the present action of God for its reality in an individual's life. Thus, this dissertation concludes that to speak of this participation as a reality by the power of the Holy Spirit, is to say that this participation is the Holy Spirit's repetition of the divine life in the life of a human being.
