This dissertation is a study of the use of figurative temple language in Paul's letters to the Corinthians (1 Cor 3:16-17; 6:19; 2 Cor 6:14-7:1) compared to the use of such language in Hellenistic philosophy, which was one important background for the audience that Paul may have sought to address. It was found that all three Pauline references have a corporate dimension, whereas philosophy speaks of the Spirit dwelling in individuals. Whereas both Paul and the philosophers speak of the need for this temple to be set apart and cleansed, for Paul the foundation of its holiness is Jesus Christ. For the philosophers it is the wise and the good who are indwelt by the Spirit; for Paul, the wisdom and the spirit of the world are described negatively. In philosophy God dwells only in the soul/mind; the physical body is disdained. Paul, rather, emphasizes the physical body as the place of God's dwelling. Philosophy views the world without exception as the dwelling place of God; for Paul it is only those who have been set apart in the name of Jesus and the Spirit in whom the Spirit dwells. Philosophy speaks positively of many gods who share the characteristics of God but Paul associates them only with idols opposed to God. Whereas philosophy speaks of the temple inclusively as being the whole world or exclusively as consisting of the wise and the good who are especially indwelt by the spirit, Paul includes all types of people without distinction but speaks exclusively of the temple as only those who belong to Christ.
