"'Though the mountains may give way and the hills may totter, my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not waver,' says Yahweh, who has compassion on you" (Isa 54:10). An expression that occurs once in the book of Isaiah, the "covenant of peace" does not appear significant at first blush. It is, in fact, an entree to the extensive and theologically important web of textual-thematic connections and intersections in Isaiah that depicts the figuration or pattern of [Hebrew characters omitted] in Yahweh's covenant relationship with his people. In this study, a literary-theological approach that incorporates exegetical methodology and intertextual insights is designed and applied to considering three groups of texts in Isaiah in which the motif of [Hebrew characters omitted] intersects with those of [Hebrew characters omitted], exodus, and servant(s), forming three interrelated intertextual webs. Building on the linguistic and literary analysis of the texts, the study explores the intertextual connections between texts, the intersection of motifs and themes, and the thematic and theological patterns that emerge from a synoptic view of these connections and intersections. Within the literary-theological context set up by the figuration of [Hebrew characters omitted], Isa 54:1-17 portrays the covenant of peace as Yahweh's enduring commitment to act for the [Hebrew characters omitted] of all who enter into covenant with him. The covenant of peace conveys to Zion Yahweh's promises of [Hebrew characters omitted] to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, and orients their realization toward the eschatological renewal and restoration of Zion. In this trajectory, the [Hebrew characters omitted] promised to Zion stands in continuity with but also develops and extends the [Hebrew characters omitted] promised under Moses, such that the nations, not just Israel, will observe Yahweh's [Hebrew characters omitted] on Zion, the restoration in the new exodus that Yahweh accomplishes by his creative-redemptive might will be cosmic in scale, and the servants of the LORD, Zion's righteous, God-blessed offspring, will comprise both Israel and the nations.
