Disordered eating behaviors in Western cultures are often explained by the role of cultural standards of beauty and thinness. Dieting behaviors are often endorsed as a means for women to achieve this standard. In traditional Chinese cultures, standards of beauty and thinness differ from the West. However, increased exposure to Western ideas may be affecting these standards. For example, Lee (1993) found that Hong Kong female students were cognitively inclined to diet despite being thin. To extend Lee's study, I examined eating attitudes and behaviors within the context of cultural variables of adolescent schoolgirls in Hong Kong. More specifically, I examined the relationships between eating patterns, body image, acculturation (Anglicized, Bi-cultural, Asian identified), and self-construal (Independent, Interdependent). Three-hundred ninety-six adolescent Hong Kong schoolgirls completed translated versions of the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), the Body Dissatisfaction (BD), Drive for Thinness (DT), and Bulimia (BL) subscales of the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 (EDI-2), a revised version of the Suinn-Lew Self-Identity Acculturation Scale (SL-ASIA), the Figure Rating Scale, and the Self-Construal Scale. Results showed that schoolgirls who were dissatisfied with their body reported a higher prevalence of dieting behavior. In addition, girls who reported higher incidences of dieting scored higher on the EAT-26, the DT, BL, and BD subscales of the EDI-2 than non-dieters. Girls reported a significant difference between their perceptions of their current body shape (M = 36.40, on a 10-90 scale) and their ideal body shape (M = 29.15). Girls who were culturally more Anglicized (measured by SL-ASIA) scored higher on the EAT-26 and the BL subscale of the EDI-2 than girls who were Asian identified. In addition, girls whose self-construals, were more independent scored higher on the BD subscale. Hong Kong schoolgirls may be influenced by Western standards of beauty and thinness. However, tests of psychometric properties of the instruments and the generally modest effect sizes indicate that the results should be interpreted with caution.
