Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was one of the last great Japanese designers of color woodblock prints. His work is intense, passionate, and sometimes disturbing, and because it has always aroused strong feelings in its viewers, Yoshitoshi and his prints have often been misunderstood. This study presents a large body of factual information about the artist and his period, and a number of illustrations of fine and representative works, which are used to reach a fuller understanding of the artist's life and work. Historical understanding arises from an interplay of reasoning and intuition, and, since many of the intuitive insights in the study cannot be substantiated by written documents, the role of intuition in the study is separately discussed. The study includes a complete catalogue of Yoshitoshi's color woodblock prints, with a description of methods of dating, a list of paintings, a study of the production of his prints, and detailed information on his engravers and publishers. It also includes essays on sources and influence, biographies of pupils, and a selected bibliography.
