The hip-hop culture is currently one of the most popular cultures around the world. The materialization of the business aspect of the hip-hop culture has evolved over the last forty years and has been embraced by organizations around the world. As a result, it has become critical for organizations to be more astute on how to relate to the best practices of the hip-hop culture. Commentators have noted that the hip-hop business and branding have combined so successfully that cultural and societal norms have been changed and connections have been formed between disparate global communities, creating social capital, in ways never seen before. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of hip-hop culture on business through a qualitative ethnographical study into the business aspect of hip-hop culture. Specifically, the ethnography realist method was used to address: (a) How did the hip-hop culture, which was considered a fad by many, become a global business? and (b) How did the global growth of hip-hop culture influence other organizations, leaders, and managers? In total, 22 individuals immersed in the hip-hop culture were interviewed for this study. The results of the study explained how the hip-hop culture grew from the streets of New York into a global business through participants' lived experiences in the hip-hop culture. The results from this study suggest that members of the hip-hop community believe that hip-hop has been very influential on several aspects of business. The partnership of businesses and members from the hip-hop culture will mutually benefit from understanding, embracing, and partnering hip-hop culture and business practices.
