Middle Eastern American (MEA) youth positive identity formation is a topic that is understudied and not readily accessible within extant literature. Positive cultural identity development can counteract the negative sentiments propagated towards MEA youth within American mainstream culture post-9/11. This research endeavor sought to demonstrate that positive cultural identity formation amongst MEA youth can lead to better mental health outcomes, social adaptability, resiliency and perseverance across different socioenvironmental backdrops. A goal of this study was to demonstrate the process by which an identity develops and the factors that promote or detract upon positive identity development. Field consultants were interviewed about their clinical knowledge and expertise working alongside MEA youth. Information obtained from field consultants in conjunction with extant literature sought to explore how developing a positive identity can act as a safeguard against negative internalized sentiments funneled via mainstream American culture. Different identity types and factors of identity promotion were explored as processes which could reduce the propensity of MEA youth experiencing psychophysiological manifestations of distress. Literature review data corroborated field consultant feedback suggesting that use of one's ethnic heritage, religion, communal support and some degree of bicultural integration can promote long-term wellbeing and functional adaptability as it is correlated with positive identity formation. Furthermore, this research outlined how mental health providers and community members can impart culturally sensitive styles of interaction and intervention to help enhance upon and guide MEA youth positive identity development for overall long-term functioning and wellbeing.
