For many people, the sibling relationship will be the longest one of their lives. It is a relationship in which many skills are developed, such as communication and healthy conflict. When one sibling has an intellectual disability, these skills cannot happen within the confines of the sibling dynamic. As a result, children may grow to adults with maladaptive coping skills and internalized guilt and shame. The purpose of this project was to propose a therapeutic group for adult siblings of people with an intellectual disability in which they could connect with others who may have a similar experience and learn how their family of origin has formed them. Through attachment theory and family systems they will gain psychoeducation and insight into their own lives. Techniques such as psychodrama, creative arts, and genograms will be used to promote growth and change their narrative. A person-centered lens will be used throughout the 16 weeks to foster empathy, trust, and a strong therapeutic alliance.
