Intimate relationships are essential to one's well-being. Relationships bring social support, create expansive networks that give individuals greater access to resources, and help buffer harmful effects of stress. Establishing and maintaining intimate relationships during adolescence and adulthood is considered one of the critical developmental tasks of young adults. This dissertation will use a gender and life course perspective to empirically explore how a history of depression and current depressive symptoms affect relationship dimensions in midlife. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), I explore the association of depression on three types of relationship outcomes: 1) relationship satisfaction, 2) intimate partner violence, and 3) sexual health. Paper 1 (i.e., Chapter 2) will explore the question: how does a history of depression predict relationship satisfaction for midlife men and women? Paper 2 (i.e., Chapter 3) aims to answer the question: how does a history of depression and minoritized positionalities (i.e., racial/ethnic identity, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, age, and first-generation immigrant status) predict intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization in adulthood and midlife? Paper 3 (i.e., Chapter 4) answers two questions: First, how does depression affect sexual health outcomes (i.e., monthly sexual frequency and sexual satisfaction) in gender-specific ways? Second, how might IPV in earlier life complicate sexual health outcomes? To answer these questions, I use cross-sectional designs that capture the history of depression and current depressive symptoms, Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), ordinal logistic regression (Maximum Likelihood Estimation), Poisson regression, mediation and moderation tests, group tests, and sensitivity analyses. Results confirmed the significant association of depression and gender on relationship satisfaction, IPV, and sexual health-primarily sexual satisfaction. Understanding the role of depression and depressive symptoms on the formation and maintenance of intimate relationships is important because quality, healthy relationships serve as a moderator of stress and lead to overall well-being; however, unhealthy relationships can exacerbate depressive symptoms, increase the likelihood of recurrent depression, or prolong depressive episodes. Understanding this connection between relationships and depression will help influence public policy through understanding this dynamic, complex pathway between depression and relationship selection, efficacy, and relationship outcomes in later life.
