Objective: Recent research has shown high rates of exposure to trauma among people with serious mental illness (SMI). In addition studies suggest that psychosis and mental illness-related experiences can be extremely traumatic and may lead to significant symptomatology. Overwhelming traumatic experiences, such as psychosis, may shatter people's core beliefs about themselves, the world, and others, but at the same time motivate people to reexamine their life, attempt to cope and try and find meaning in their experiences. Indeed, coping with adversity may also foster a unique outcome; namely posttraumatic growth (PTG), which is contingent upon people's ability to reexamine their core beliefs after trauma, attempt to cope and possibly find meaning. Little is known, however, about PTG as a possible outcome of coping among people with SMI and psychosis. Thus, the current study aimed to explore the possibility of PTG in this population, and more specifically; the possible paths for PTG when traumatic history, psychopathological symptoms and posttraumatic stress symptoms are mediated by the reexamination of core beliefs, meaning making and coping self-efficacy. Research has suggested that psychosis and mental illness-related experiences can be extremely traumatic (Berry et al., 2013; Gelkopf et al., 2013; Mueser et al., 2010), and that traumatic events can be so devastating that it may shatter people's assumptive world and disrupt normal meaning making processes (Janoff-Bulman, 2006). As in the case of traumatic life-events in non-clinical populations, psychosis as a traumatic experience could theoretically also lead to PTG (Pooley et al., 2013). PTG consists of five facets of growth: appreciation of life, relating to others, new found possibilities in life, personal strength, and spiritual change (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996; 2004). PTG occurs after an adverse trauma, which may have significant negative impact, but at the same time be the starting point of an emotional and behavioral rebuilding process (Calhoun & Tedeschi, 2004). Although multiple studies have found that traumas are frequent and repetitive experiences in individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) and psychosis (Mueser et al., 2002; 2004), and qualitative studies on the experiences of recovery have reported elements of growth in this population (Davidson et al., 2005; Roe & Chopra, 2003), only few have explored the possibility of PTG in people with SMI who have experienced psychosis. Psychotic symptoms are a common feature of serious mental illness (SMI), specifically in schizophrenia and other psychotic-disorders. Individuals who have experienced psychosis are also more likely to have been exposed to trauma (Selten et al., 2013), and are more vulnerable to developing posttraumatic symptomatology (Bendall et al., 2006; Morrison, Read & Turkington, 2005; Mueser et al., 2002; Priebe et al., 1998; Shelvin et al., 2008). The impact of exposure to traumatic events has been found to worsen the characteristic symptoms of serious mental illnesses and psychosis (Kilcommons & Morrison, 2005; Penn et al., 1997; Sherrer, 2011). In addition, psychopathological symptoms (i.e., positive, negative and general psychopathological symptoms) themselves can be extremely traumatic, for instance; positive psychotic symptoms can be experienced as severely traumatic on account of reality distortions such as delusions and hallucinations .
