This basic qualitative study explored the impact of coaching leadership styles on professional athletes' motivation. It is an inductive exploratory approach comprised of a small sample of athletes from various professional sports. Participants included 11 male professional athletes who agreed to partake in the study. Each participant was asked to respond to a number of questions related to their preference of coaching leadership styles and the impact it has on motivation. Analysis of the data found that younger athletes tolerated a more authoritative coaching style, while more experienced and veteran athletes preferred a more inclusive and communal style of coaching. The study also found that younger athletes were motivated by their coaches based on distinct characteristics of the coach, while more experienced athletes believed they were self-motivated. The data collected was transcribed and member checked for validity. It was then coded for themes and sub-themes. Further research is warranted with a greater, more diverse sample of athletes from a larger selection of sports.
