Film productions of William Shakespeare's play Hamlet form an intellectual history of modern Western culture. Analyses of these films, from 1948 to 2000, trace the responses to the major developments in politics, criticism, and social changes of Western society. The films document the psychological transitions of each generation. Hamlet continues as a work with universal appeal, and one that illuminates the many facets of the human condition. As a cultural touchstone, the play invites multiple interpretations in film, and directors consciously and unconsciously use it as a mirror of the unique concerns of their time. Therefore, by thinking about where future film versions of Hamlet might be going, we are, in fact, identifying transitions and paradigm shifts in our current milieu.
