Family ritual has been shown to effect feelings of support and bonding between family members. If the element(s) of ritual that bond family members and create feelings of support and stability can be discovered, then families dealing with change, and families that lack stability and cohesion may be infused with the component of ritual that binds families together. This qualitative and quantitative study utilizes individual and group interviews, and the Family Ritual Questionnaire, to inquire into the nature and components of family rituals as they relate to family bonding. Participants consisted of two families, one comprised of five individuals, and the other eight. The results from the Family Ritual Questionnaire demonstrate a significant difference between families in the vacation setting and slight differences were found between the two families on the special celebrations setting factor, the role dimension factor, and the meaning linked to family setting factor. During the interviews both families discussed the elements of togetherness, communication, emotions, community, food, tradition, spirituality, values, honoring other family members, and support. The results of the study demonstrate important elements of family ritual for the two families, which may generalize to other families, including the importance of togetherness, and ties to the community.
