Thesis (M.S.)--Western Illinois University, 2018.
Includes bibliographical references
With the constant evolvement of communication technology, and more specifically social media, this thesis aimed to gain a better understanding of how social media usage affects the mental health of Western Illinois University graduate students. The study contained a random stratified sample of Western Illinois University graduate students on the Quad Cities and Macomb campuses who were enrolled for the Spring 2018 semester. A demographic survey and hour-long interviews were used to collect data on social media usage and mental health. A modified phenomenological method was used to analyze the contents of the data: bracketing, imaginative variation, and reoccurring theme compilation. Five participants volunteered to participate in the study. The findings indicated that social media is a major influence in graduate students' lives, whether it is being used to keep in contact with friends or family or to keep up with the most current news. Additionally, social media does hinder positive mental health outcomes among Western Illinois University graduate students. The findings of this study contribute to the current literature by allowing for health professionals and health advocates to correctly address the need for monitoring social media usage. Additionally, with the taboo nature of mental health, this will lead to creating more open discussions about the impact of mental health among our nation's population.
