With suicide being the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, survivors of suicide is a growing population. Those bereaved by suicide, survivors of suicide, are left to make sense of the loss and to heal the hurt within. The research question guiding the study asked: What is the spiritual experience of an adult survivor of parental suicide? The study used qualitative, multi-case study methodology to gather real-world data, through the voice of the participants, to understand the spiritual experience of an adult losing a parent to suicide. The sample consisted of nine participants, who as adults lost a parent to suicide, drawn from the larger population of survivors of suicide using a purposeful, snowball sampling approach. Data analysis used an inductive thematic approach to attend to all data during the within-case analysis and the cross-case analysis. Findings indicate that the trauma of suicide often leaves a path of shattered assumptions causing one to question the meaning of life, one's beliefs and values, and one's worldview. While religious or spiritual resources often provide comfort after a loss, many of the participants in the study left the church because they did not find the compassion or healing they were seeking. Findings further suggest that the stigma of suicide is real and further complicated by the silence which shrouds a death by suicide. Not having the opportunity to process the death with others leads to disenfranchisement and exacerbates bereavement symptoms. The loss is often comprehensible, but the manner of death is not. Suicide bereavement among participants in the study involved two traumatic events which happened simultaneously: the untimely loss of a parent to suicide and the shattering of one's assumptive worldview.
