Thesis (M.A.)--Northeastern Illinois University, 2017.
Includes bibliographical references
The purpose of this project thesis was for the researcher to gauge how much direct care workers knew and understood about PCC care and how to implement PCC into their professional roles. The needs analysis group consisted of six participants ranging from 18-65 years of age with at least one year of experience in LTC's facilities. The survey questions for the needs analysis group were constructed to assess whether the participants knew the meaning of PCC and how the direct care workers currently use the concepts of PCC in the workplace. During the project development phase, the researcher used books, videos, web resources, and training manuals to examine training through a hands-on approach that used video. The researcher used a follow-up focus group. The focus group phase consisted of six direct care workers and the feedback from the focus group consisted of a series of questions. The results conclude that training in PCC care for the direct care worker was imperative; this needed to include training on how to listen to the family, how to communicate with the patient, and how to understand personal bias, stereotypes, and behaviors. Future research may focus on a larger group of direct care workers.
