Prior to the Covid pandemic, life seemed to be somewhat normal. People would go to work, go to grocery stores in comfort, knowing shelves are stocked and take their families to places of worship without a care in the world. All of that changed at the beginning of 2020. A new foreign virus, never before seen by man, is one of the culprits that will cripple the economy, the healthcare industry, and the way people live their lives. The number of homeless people in the Golden State increased by 22,500 between 2019 and 2022, bringing the total to 173,800 (Hoeven, 2022). Despite the fact that California has spent over $14 billion fighting homelessness, some experts contend that funding is being mismanaged and that the issue is more widespread. This crisis has only worsened with the massive unemployment brought about by pandemic lockdown measures bringing economic conditions in California to a crippling halt (Smith, 2022). It is evident that Covid-19, along with other factors, has played a significant role in how people struggle with mental health. These same mental health issues also lead to physical health issues caused by the effects of substance abuse. To better understand why some of these issues continue to exist, a detailed analysis must be conducted to see what the root causes are. Cause and prevention can all be determined through the use of surveys in which, people who are experiencing homelessness answer questions stemming from the most common and uncommon causes. Since the pandemic's start, mental health, substance abuse, and homelessness have risen. I propose to test the correlation between mental health, substance abuse, and homelessness before and after the pandemic.
