An experiment was conducted to compare the effects of music, Baroque and Rock-n-Roll, and learning, procedure, self-read comprehension information and information read to the subjects. Two control groups were utilized, each receiving one of the two learning conditions but hearing no music. One hundred and fifty-six undergraduate students from Ocean County College in Toms River, New Jersey served as subjects. A two-way analysis of variance did not support the hypothesis that those subjects who heard the Baroque music would perform better than those who heard the Rock-n-Roll. Subjects who were part of the self-read group performed better, overall, than those subjects who were read the learning information. It was further discovered that the group who heard the Rock-n-Roll selection and self-read the material performed the best when considering reading comprehension. Several considerations to explain these findings were provide. For example, musical preference may be more important and relevant to this age group particularly. Furthermore, the integrated learning concept was not fully supported by the findings of this experiment.
