Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) was the most acclaimed flutist of his time, and his contributions to the development of flute playing are far-reaching. His success was inextricably linked to the new type of flute that he used, and the pandemic changes in Parisian life during the nineteenth century. By reviewing the innovative flute designs of Theobold Boehm that were gradually accepted in Paris, and by examining the stages of Taffanel's career in the context of Parisian society, we begin to recognize that Taffanel emancipated flute playing from the restrictive paradigm of early nineteenth-century flutists as he cultivated the full capabilities necessary for the expression of romantic music and the music of the twentieth century.
