The Doctoral Performance and Research submitted by Douglas B. Lindsey, under the direction of John Aley, Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Musical Arts consists of the following: I. Written Project: "Beyond the Galant: Joseph Haydn's Sturm und Drang Symphonies 26, 44, 45, and 48 arranged for trumpet duet with practical historical commentary." This new 120-page set of duets arranged from four Haydn symphonies accompanied by historical commentary aims to allow the novice trumpeter to explore Haydn's musical world through an entirely different lense. The thrilling melodic contours, exciting harmonic shifts, and interesting stories behind each of these works makes this set of duets a great companion for any trumpet player interested in learning more about Haydn life and works. Beyond the arrangements, the historical commentary informs the reader on a variety of topics ranging from the background of each work to the basics of classical period ornamentation. II. Mixed Chamber/Solo Recital Morphy Hall: Concertino - Andre Jolivet; Trio for Brass - Francis Poulenc; Fandango - Joseph Turrin; Symphony 5, Mvmt 2 for Trumpet Septet - Sergei Prokifiev, arr. Douglas Lindsey; Vignettes - James Stephenson; Carnival of Venice - J. B. Arban. V. Lecture Recital, 12/10/2012, Morphy Hall. "Beyond the Galant:" A brief talk on the efficacy of arranging Haydn symphonies for trumpet duet and trumpet ensemble. The lecture will include performances of Haydn's 44th Symphony for trumpet duet and Haydn's Symphony 48 for trumpet quintet.
