Large corporations and businesses have experienced success with Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A) technologies. However, empirical research revealed that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are still catching up in adopting BI&A technologies. Therefore, more data may be needed to learn how B&A technologies add value to small businesses. Analytics in professional sports business operations should also be explored due to the limited available literature. This generic qualitative inquiry explored managers' perceptions of U.S. professional sports organizations' knowledge of how BI&A technologies influenced the decision-making within their business departments to increase productivity. Huber's theory and resource-based theories (RBT) served as conceptual frameworks. Zoom VOIP (voice over the internet protocol) was applied to perform 12 semi-structured interviews with managers and assigned analysts for data collection. The inclusion criteria included (a) U.S. managers or assigned analysts who worked at least one year within a professional sports team business operations department such as ticketing, corporate sponsorship, TV broadcasting, or marketing; (b) a working knowledge of Business Intelligence (BI), analytics, or BI&A; and (c) involved in the decision-making processes relating to efficiency or departmental improvement. During an interview with P9, data saturation was acquired. Braun and Clark's data reduction technique was utilized. Themes were identified using NVivo data analysis software. The guided research question for this study was: What strategies have some department managers of U.S. professional sports organizations used to include BI&A usage across all business departments to increase productivity? Three themes that emerged from the data were (a) strategies, (b) ticketing, and (c) corporate partnerships. The findings may provide insights to help professional sports managers increase productivity using BI&A technologies.
